Ramadan at Stanford

Over a billion people around the world will take a breath, a pause, and engage in a spiritual detox that is Ramadan. Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar in which Muslims from all walks of life will fast from dawn to sunset. This means abstaining from all food and drink throughout the day. Muslims also exert every effort to become more spiritual in daily life, including giving to charity, personal reflection, and prayers.

We at Stanford University will mark this special time in a number of ways, including welcoming everyone to an iftar (breaking the fast) each evening from 8:00 PM in the CIRCLE (Old Union, 3rd Floor). The Muslim Student Union will also host an Open Iftar in White Plaza on Mon May 6, 7:30 PM for which they encourage everyone to come along and join in the festivities.

Eid al-Fitr is a celebration of the efforts Muslims have made throughout the month of Ramadan. The celebration includes gift-giving, sharing greetings and spending time with families and friends. The Festival of Eid marks the end of Ramadan and happens to land, this year, during Dead Week. Stanford will celebrate with an Eid festival in White Plaza from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM on Tuesday, June 4, and again everyone is warmly invited to join in the festivities. We will also have chai/sweet trolleys across campus to give everyone an opportunity to join in.

Each evening before Iftar, the ORL welcomes you to the sanctuary (3rd Floor, Old Union), a space where you can listen and learn from your peers. Students will be leading 20 minute spiritual rejuvenation sessions of recitation, singing, praying, and talking about Ramadan experiences. All self-identifying Muslim students and staff are welcome. Everyone is welcome to join the Muslim community in breaking the fast everyday from Monday, May 6 to Monday, June 3 at 8:00 PM in the CIRCLE (Old Union, 3rd floor).

Exceptions include:

Monday, May 6, an Open Iftar will take place in White Plaza at 7:30 PM.

Friday, May 17, Dean Steinwert and the ORL welcome students to an Iftar at 659 Salvatierra Street.

Tuesday, May 21, the ORL welcomes President Mark Tessier-Lavigne and guests from around campus to an Iftar in the CIRCLE (Old Union, 3rd floor).

Dinner is served at Arillaga Family Dining Commons offering a halal menu. A late plate is available upon request, advanced booking is preferred.



Pre-packaged meal boxes are available for pickup in all dining halls and the CIRCLE (Old Union, 3rd floor). Students with special dietary needs can pre-order their Suhoor boxes online at and pickup at Arillaga Family Dining Commons. For any questions please contact Minha Khan (

Don’t skip Suhoor (pre-dawn meal).

Eating a well-balanced pre-dawn meal will help to provide essential nutrients and keep your body fueled for your daily activities. Try to incorporate complex carbohydrates and high fiber foods like whole grain cereals and bread products along with fresh and dried fruit. Including high protein foods like eggs, cheese, beans/lentils or yogurt will also help to maintain your energy levels during the day.


Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and eat hydrating foods (fruit and vegetables) between Iftar and Suhoor. Choose water over sugar-sweetened beverages and avoid caffeinated drinks as these can be dehydrating. Having milk or yogurt drinks (e.g. laban/lassi) at Suhoor is a great way to start your day fully hydrated.

Consume plenty of vegetables.

While vegetables may not seem particularly filling or satisfying when breaking your fast, they contain essential vitamins and nutrients that help to keep you nourished. Adding a salad, soup or cooked vegetables to your Iftar meal will also help to curb overindulgence after a day of fasting. 

Eat slowly.

Take   time   to   thoroughly   chew   and   enjoy   your   food  during Suhoor and Iftar. This will help give your body time to digest the food and will help you be mindful about your food choices.

Plan ahead.

Ensure you have access to healthy, well balanced choices for Suhoor and Iftar. Stock up your dorm with healthy Suhoor options (granola bars, instant oatmeal, whole grain bread, nuts/seeds, fruit) and research what food options are available to you after sunset. If you are on a Stanford Dining meal plan, visit AFDC for Iftar or take food to-go from your home dining hall or other campus eatery (be sure to refrigerate any perishable foods). Hours for campus eateries can be found online


Your body will have low points during the day. This is usually around mid-day, right about lunch time. Taking a quick 30-minute nap, or even simply resting, during this time helps preserve your energy and allows you to wake up feeling refreshed.

Create community.

Meals are social events. It can get isolating to be the only one eating at Suhoor and Iftar when all your friends are meeting at eating at different parts of the day. It makes the fast harder if you are going through it alone, so try to connect with others who are on the same meal schedule as you are. Community support makes the fast so much easier! There will be late night prayers on the 3rd floor of Old Union every night  at around 10 PM, starting Sunday, May 5th.
